The Future of Europe and Relations with Canada: Navigating a Changing Global Order
Overview:
This guest talk explores the evolving role of Europe on the global stage and the prospects for a deeper EU-Canada relationship amid intensifying geopolitical tensions.
As the international order becomes increasingly fragile—with rising authoritarianism, the erosion of multilateralism, and great-power competition intensifying—Europe faces internal and external challenges that test its resilience. At the same time, Canada is redefining its global engagement in light of shifting U.S. leadership, and the growing influence of China in the world. This lecture will critically assess how these dynamics affect the future of the European project. It will also provide an opportunity for an open conversation on the possible impact of them on the Canada-EU/Europe relations.
Key Topics:
- The global context: renewed geopolitical competition, war in Ukraine, weakening
multilateral institutions - Internal challenges for the EU: democratic backsliding and ever increasing search
for European strategic autonomy (both in defense and competitiveness) - Strategic dilemmas in transatlantic relations: navigating U.S. unpredictability,
NATO’s ever evolving role, and Europe’s push for “strategic autonomy”
Questions for an Open Conversation:
- Canada’s positioning within the transatlantic alliance and its foreign policy priorities toward Europe
- Future cooperation in trade (e.g., CETA), technology, green transition, security, and democratic resilience
